Today, the Aadhaar card is one of the most important government identification proofs for every citizen in India. Issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), it is mandatory that every citizen holds an Aadhaar card due to its varied uses and importance.
Although most government identification cards are issued only after an individual attains 18 years of age, the Aadhaar card, on the other hand, is one such identification card that can be issued to even newborns.
Recently, UIDAI introduced a new Aadhaar card category, known as “Baal Aadhaar Card”. Baal Aadhaar literally means Kid’s Aadhaar. Also popularly known as Blue Aadhaar Card Application or e aadhar card, this special card is issued to children who are below 5 years of age. The card is blue in colour in order to help people differentiate it from the regular card.
About Baal Aadhaar Card:
Just like the normal Aadhaar card, the Baal Aadhaar card too is a 12-digit identification proof. However, the main difference is that the Baal Aadhaar card is a temporary document without biometric data such as fingerprint and IRIS scans and other details. Since biometrics are not developed in children below 5 years, a mandatory biometric update can be done after the child crosses 5 years at the nearest Aadhaar enrolment centre. The child is issued a normal Aadhaar card with updated biometric details. However, when the child turns 15, a final set of biometric data needs to be updated and submitted.
Although it is currently not mandatory to enrol for a Baal Aadhaar card, it could become mandatory in the near future. Having a Baal Aadhaar card has beneficial uses and hence, it is advisable to apply for a Baal Aadhaar card for your child.
