If your heart falls for aquatic species like fishes and you love to keep them at home then having an aquarium can be a great choice. But only aquarium is enough for your too much love for fishes? You can even think to build a pond at home. I didn’t meet anyone who ever had regretted developing a pond in their garden area. There are people who would have made alteration to their pond designs because they know experiencing it can be fun and pleasure, especially you want to stock it with fishes. Here are some tips to consider if you want to build the one at your home:

Build a big pond

I suggest you to design a big pond, as big as you have space in your garden area or as your budget allow you. Most of the people like to begin with 500 to 2000 gallons and if more space I available then go with it. The reason behind a giant pond, if you want to stock it with fish then in the beginning you want few and then more.

There are hundreds of colorful species you can choose from and due to availability of many varieties one is not enough. But keep in mind, avoid overcrowding. Fish may need aeration and water filtration equipment and such things would be added during installation and designing phase of pond.

Place it away from direct sunlight

Fishes need shade keeps them from stressing out. You can even place plants close to the edge of pond. Things that provide shade on the water are useful to keep away from direct sunlight. But often big trees are avoided to keep garbage out of water, as it increases the maintenance cost of the pond.

Water pump & filtration system

You must place it in the pond for the maintenance and health concern of fishes. You get these from anywhere, pond or aquatic shops. If you can’t buy a professional filtration system then you can make it home. You should also keep ultraviolet sterilizer equipment in the pond.

Get a water heater

You can keep an inexpensive water heater inside, if you live in a cold climate and your fish winter outside.

Don’t put goldfish in pond

Avoid tempting the pool with goldfish, in the wider ponds’ area they grow and breed easily.

Building a pond can be joy and fun to own. And placing it in garden area with colorful fishes makes it more attractive.
