The Basic Food Requirements for Bright & Colorful Budgies

The predominant food of budgies is usually grass seeds. However, budgies relay on a diet of seeds, millets, whole grain, sprouts and breads. Variety in regular diet fulfills all essential nutrients and keeps budgies well nourished. Dependency on only seeds generates obesity, so multiple food options prevents such issues.

You should place a flat dish filled with seeds so the birds can feed easily. You can reuse the seeds which have not been eaten by the budgies. Just blow out the husk over the plate and then top up the remaining seeds.

You can serve multiple fruits, veggies and leafy stuff as budgies love to eat coriander leaves, greens, beetroot, cabbage, spinach, etc. Put all the leafy stuff and veggies in the cage that your budgie loves to eat. Offer them only fresh leaves because rotten or refrigerated food stuff can cause indigestion. Clean all the leftovers time by time from the cage to avoid stinky smell and bacteria breeding.

Food variants like chocolates, coffee, avocado, tea, apple seeds, eggplant, peach seeds, apple seeds, peanuts, etc to your budgies as these food items consists substances that can be toxic for budgies.

Water for Budgies

Provide clean and fresh water every day to your budgies. In the summers, constantly change the water in the bowl and provide regular supply in the cage. Keep replacing the water if it is filled with the food particles & leftovers and become soiled. You can find water dispensers in the market that are suited for birds. This prevents the water from getting soiled.

Calcium & other minerals for Budgies

Birds can suffer from calcium deficiency, especially female budgies. Their body requires calcium as they lay eggs. They can suffer from dangerous condition i.e. egg binding, due to calcium deficiency. In such condition the eggs may have soft shells and the baby will not develop and causes death.

It is prominent to include calcium in budgies diet and the Cuttle bones are great source of providing calcium to your colorful pets. You can find cuttle bone in all pet stores. You can either place it directly in the cage or crush it in powder form and mix it with the meal.

You can also look for other sources of calcium like broken eggshells and calcium supplements which are available in the market and offer to your budgies for their good health.

You can also offer mineral blocks as such type of supplements contain calcium and essential ingredients such as zinc, phosphorus, magnesium, Iron, etc that are necessary for budgies health.
