Extrinsic reasons include stains from drinking beverages like tea or coffee or chain smoking which may lead to a lot of brown sticky stains which are very difficult to remove by brushing the teeth and also by hand scaling in a dental office. Also some medicines inflict teeth with stains. All these comprise of extrinsic discoloration of teeth. The intrinsic reasons for discoloration of teeth includes enamel hypoplasia or tetracycline drug intake during the time of pregnancy or chemicals which are endemically present in the water of cities or different areas like fluorosis or any sort of disease may also render teeth discolored and inferior in looks.

Tooth whitening can be done in two ways.

  1. In-office- in office teeth bleaching is a typical procedure in which teeth are packed with swabs of bleaching agent and left for a few hours to de-stain the teeth. This in-office procedure can demand up to two to three sittings in a dental office.
  2. At home- in this method, a customized silicon tray is fabricated by taking an impression of the patient’s teeth and then this is delivered to the patient to be used at home for bleaching purpose along with a teeth whitening kit which is very easy to use by a layman. The kit includes a customized tray and a teeth whitening solution. The solution is applied evenly in the tray and worn by the patient in the night before going to bed. Though it is not very comfortable to wear but gradually it comes into habit. Throughout in the night, the kit does its work and you will be able to see the results in a just a matter of few weeks.

Among both the procedures, the in-office bleaching procedure is the one which shows up the results very fast and the teeth do get whitened in a noticeable manner. Although a bit time consuming and a bit uncomfortable, this procedure is a sure shot method for a long term teeth whitening. Teeth remain white for 4-5 years with this method, while with the at-home bleach, teeth do not get whitening enough, just that much which can be observed with a slight changes when compare to the original one.

Side effects of teeth whitening

Tooth whitening however is a great procedure for bleaching the discolored teeth, but it comes with many side effects. One of the major drawbacks is sensitivity. Since bleaching agents used in the teeth whitening solutions are very harmful and can act directly on dentinal tubules making the pulp sensitive, chances are that hypersensitivity may increase while bleaching the teeth.
