Writing in calligraphy

Outline or sketch before you start

Outline the areas where you want to sketch the word, even you can sketch the design of the specific character, at the beginning stage. You can design the entire page for learning convenience. Use the ruler to draw the outlines with proper spacing and look at references to draw the characters in original style.

Hold your writing instrument correctly

Calligraphy pens will be held in a different style than the regular pencils. The technique of holding the brush is also different that depends on, whether you are drawing in Eastern or Western calligraphy. Following the rules properly will enable you to draw correctly.

Eastern style: You should hold the brush straight and closer to the nib of the tool.

Western calligraphy: Hold the brush in the way you would use a regular paint brush. It will give more fluid and rounder form to the characters.

Start creating letters

Create the letters on the page and focus on the writing utensil that how you are holding it. Keep the strokes proportional and concentrate on width variation to shape the characters in a pleasing form. Try to draw at a steady speed, because slow speed can lead to the staining the page with ink or uneven characters. Allow the ink to dry otherwise it will smudge.

Use pressure to control the width

The width variation of the characters makes the letters look like calligraphy. It can be done by controlling the angle of your drawing tool and pressure on it. Different tools, pen, brushes, and nibs will allow you to draw the letters in variation.
